Old Home Remedy for Colds

Herbal Remedies

Many years ago when I first started getting into alternative medicines, vitamins and supplements, I had a rather amazing experience using herbal remedies.  This happened about 25 years ago in the city of Glendale California.  Our infant son had developed an ear infection.

We brought him to our local pediatrician and she suggested that he get tubes put into his ears to cause them to drain.  Not only did I not want to see my infant son go under the knife, but heck … I was poor and just couldn’t afford the medical bills for such a procedure.  We needed a better way to handle this situation.

I contacted one of my friends who knew this 83 year old woman of Cherokee Indian descent named Bessie.  He suggested that I see her before taking any drastic actions.  My friend Irv said that Bessie has supplied him with both herbal remedies and homeopathic medicines and she would know what to do.  I called Bessie on a Tuesday and asked when I could come by and she said Friday afternoon would be fine.

Wednesday of that week came and I began to feel a roughness and tickle in my throat.  By friday morning I felt like something the dogs dragged in and disgarded.  I had a raging full blown cold in progress.  Stuffy head, eyes hurt, runny nose… the works.  Friday rolled around and I arrived at Bessie’s front door and rang the bell.

Bessie answered and the first words that came from her were “Darling.. you got a cold.  You come on in and set yourself down in the kitchen and I’ll fix you right up.”  I said “Otay.”  Bessie proceeded to say - “Now the best thing for a cold like yours is cayanne pepper.  The hotter the better.” As I sat at her kitchen table, Bessie went into her cupboard and pulled out a large quart size cellophane bag of bright red powdery substance, a small bottle and a shot glass and placed them on the table before me.  She then went into the fridge and fetched a bottle of  apple juice, unfiltered, and some measuring spoons from a nearby drawer.  Bessie then went into mixing this concoction up for me and continued to say - “Now, you take 1 teaspoon of this here cayanne pepper put it into the glass.  Then 1/4 teaspoon of licorice root.  Mix it up with some apple juice.  Make sure its apple juice as orange juice is too acidic.”  Then Bessie grabbed another small glass and poured some more apple juice into it.  She handed me the shot glass and went onto say..” Now you take this and swoller it right down.  Don’t swush it around in your mouth as it’ll burn like the dickens.  Here’s some more juice to wash it down with.”

I peered down at this bubbling mixture which reminded me of everything from Dante’s inferno to glowing hot molten lava beds.  I blew my nose then I raised the shot glass to my mouth and gulped it down.  I quickly, without hesitation, chased it down with some more apple juice.  I didn’t know what to expect but suddenly heat erupted in the center of my body.  It quickly fanned out in all directions.  All my limbs felt this internal warmth.  It traveled to my lungs which just opened up, my nose started running, beads of sweat appeared on my forehead.  As I was undergoing this metamorphical change, Bessie went on to say.  “Darling! You did that good and should feel better in a few minutes.  What it does is opens the fine capillaries in your lungs and  cayanne is rich in vitamin C.  The licorice root is good for your lungs and helps to dampen the blow of the cayanne in your stomach.  How ya feeling?”  I took my hankerchief and blotted the beads of sweat from my forehead, the tears in my eyes and the excessive flow from my nose and said.. “Gee, it feels real warm but my head is clearing up.  I don’t feel as stuffy like having a head full of cotton.”

I thanked Bessie and within 15 minutes I was feeling real good.  I could concentrate, my chest felt decongested, head unstuffed.  From that point on, my head cold was over.  By evening, I felt fine.

Two years later Bessie moved away from Glendale to live at her sons home somewhere in Riverside county California.  Dear ole Bessie would be in her hundreds by now if she was still around in her current physical frame.  Over the span of 25 years I have recommended this cold formula to many friends and people I’ve met.  All have reported success with it.  I’ll always give credit to Bessie for this cold remedy.  Thanks Bessie!  - Ray

ps: The ear infection formula for my son worked too.  It was a simple combination of Garlic Oil and Lobelia Oil. One drop of each in each ear.  Plug the ear with a little cotton.

Communication - Vitamins and Supplements

Man Holding a TreeThe essence of quality communication and it’s entire purpose is to bring about an increased understanding between the people involved in the communication.

There are, however, exceptions to this statement.  One is if someone wishes to intentionally mislead.  Another exception is when one is misinformed or uninformed and passes this misinformation along.

In the vitamin/supplement industry there are those that may well believe that they are selling a particular product but have not done due diligence to ensure that the product is exactly what is advertised.  They have taken someone’s word for it.  I have read that some of the product called Taheebo coming from South America is actually Mahogany sawdust .   Those that deal with this product may not even be aware that it is Mahogany sawdust because they have not taken the time to have it analyzed and so continue to promote it as Taheebo (Pau D’Arco).

As there is virtually no way for a consumer to be certain that they are getting what they paid for (except to have it analyzed themselves) they are relieing on the company they bought from to have completed their due diligence and ensure that the product is what it is represented to be.

In some cases diligence has not been done and so the consumer winds up with a product that is not what they thought they had purchased and does not, of course, address the condition for which they had purchased the product.

In order for a communication to bring about an understanding one must be correctly informed and keep him/herself informed.  To do less would simply mean they are passing along their own misunderstanding and therefore miscommunication occurs often to the detriment of the consumer.

Currently there is no universally accepted standards for the vitamin/supplement/herb industry - which I hope will soon be remedied by those involved the industry and are willing to be responsible for this communication to the public.

Germanium and Organic Germanium

Today I’d like to talk a little bit about Germanium and Organic Germanium also known as Ge-132 or Ge-Oxy 132.

Germanium is a metallic substance with an atomic number of 32.  It was discovered by a fellow named Clemens Winkler who then named it after his country, Germany.  Germanium has been used for years in electronics making semiconductors, transistors and even fiber optic systems.

You might be wondering why I’m bringing up an element used for making electronics on for a health topic.  I have been a skeptic of Germanium for a long time having heard of its anti-cancer properties, immune system boosting effects and a plethora of other positive benefits.

This is because we are talking about two different but related things.

There exists Germanium and then there is Organic Germanium. These two should never be mixed up as taking Germanium can cause renal & liver failure, not to mention a host of other problems.

The late Dr. Asai wrote a book in 1980 called ‘Miracle Cure’ and it went out of print before 1990.  You might still be able to find a copy of it at www.amazon.com.   Dr. Asai developed a way to turn Germanium into an organic form that the body could use without doing any harm.  He also did extensive research into using Germanium to help treat cancer

The pure powder form of Organic Germanium is known to sell for over $1,000.00 per 100 grams (about  3 ½ ounces).

Organic Germanium is a supplement that you should do research on and be careful before taking.  There is no way of telling without a certificate of analysis if the Germanium you’re using is actually organic or inorganic.  Inorganic Germanium has been sold and is still being sold in the USA.  As far as I know there are only a handful of manufactures located in Japan that use the methods created by Dr. Asai in the creation of Organic Germanium.

Here is an excerpt from the article - the article can be found at http://www.proviesupplements.com/articles/yeasts.html

“Other Helpful Tips on Avoiding Yeast Infections
1. It’s suggested that you take showers instead of bathing while you’re treating a yeast infection.
2. Drink cranberry juice. Unsweetened is the best. Excellent anti-oxidant properties.”

We are currently researching the affects of energy drinks and the ingredients.   I’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

I hope everyone is having a Happy 2009!
